What are Operational Protocols?

Operational Protocols are sets of rules and procedures used by organizations and governments in order to maintain the standards of global development ethics. These protocols are used to evaluate and asses the impact of development and humanitarian projects on social, economic, and environmental well being.

Environmental Impact Assessment

Economic Impact Assessments (EIAs) are used in order to determine the economic effects of a development proposal or project. EIAs will identify stake holders and measure significant indicators in order, collect data, and make estimations on the economic effects.

Social Impact Assessments are used to evaluate social side effects of development projects on stakeholders and communities affected. They do this by determining key impacts both directly and indirectly related to the project, as well as asses impact on vulnerable groups of people. Then determine ways to mitigate negative impact.

Environmental Impact Assessments are used to assess environmental impact of development projects, and develop methods to mitigate negative consequences for the environment by measuring significant indicators, such as pollution or land use.

Who Uses Operational Protocols?

Many notable organizations use operational protocols for selecting and analyzing projects or programs to potentially implement. This Flow Chart shows examples of groups that use them. In the flow chart, the organizations are categorized into four groups: consulting firms, humanitarian organizations, governmental organizations, and global financial institutions. For each organization, there are examples of projects they have been involved in to show their approach and expertise.
